There is a new breed of suburban mom: the Supercharged Fitness-Mom!
Have you spotted her around town? She’s always pre or post-workout and sporting a cute athletic outfit! Now, as a Yoga Teacher & Certified Holistic Health Coach, I sort of fit this description, but after all, this is my job.
The Supercharged Fitness Moms of today aren’t afraid to train hard and break a sweat. They are in the gym or hitting the pavement working hard to reach their next fitness goals, and they are focused.
These moms are truly amazing! The Supercharged Fitness Moms that I know are involved on many levels: raising money for great causes when they participate in 5Ks or half-marathons, organizing fitness events for charities, or reaching out to include kids in their fitness activities to combat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. They juggle work, a home life, and exercise, and they are not just participating in classes, lots of these moms are getting trained to teach the classes and become experts. They are masters of kettle bells, Cross Fit, TRX, Pilates, and Zumba® (to name a few!). I am in constant awe of this inspiring breed of moms and motivated to “up” my own level of fitness.
So are YOU a Supercharged Fitness Mom? Are you in the best shape of your life, or are you watching from the couch? If you’ve been watching your neighbors run by your house as they train for their next race, while you’re watching old re-runs it may be time to UP your level of fitness, too!
So the next question of course is, how? How about one step at a time?
This level of fitness doesn’t happen overnight. The truth is that you don’t become a master of anything without practice and commitment. Commit to training one day at a time.
Start by trying different types of exercise, and see which one you enjoy. I know several moms who have benefited from at home fitness DVDs (building up their comfort level and courage before hitting a group class, or simply enjoying the time alone). Others have thrived from programs like “Couch to 5K”, which give you a lot of time, instruction, and motivation to get in5K running shape.
Still, others enjoy being under the supervision of a live teacher, and enjoy group exercise classes or working-out with a trainer. Once you find a form of fitness you like, let it become your new habit (just like brushing your teeth!).
Take your time and remember to just do something each day, even if it’s just 15- 20 minutes. Incorporate your workout into your schedule like a new ritual. These new rituals are stepping stones, leading you toward your fitness goals.
So whether you’re a Supercharged Fitness Mom, couch potato, or somewhere in between, don’t be worried. Feel inspired by others, and take deliberate steps forward to improved health and fitness.
