Photographing the Yale and Harvard football captains together for the cover of the football program was started by Charlie Loftus, Yale’s sports information director from 1943 through 1968, and an innovator of the first order. Charlie was also instrumental in titling the Yale-Harvard contest as The Game, words which appears on the program covers along with the photos of the captains. The first such program cover was in 1961, and it is now a tradition.
