Odin Lloyd and Aaron Hernandez lived similar lives up to June 17, 2013. Both lives then took drastically different turns when Lloyd was murdered.
It is well known who Aaron Hernandez is, a Bristol native, football star at the University of Florida, NFL tight end, and now accused murderer, but the life of Odin Lloyd, who Hernandez is suspected of killing, isn’t as clear.
Odin Lloyd was a 27-year old man from Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood. Lloyd and Hernandez, of North Attleboro, Mass., knew each other and were said to be friends. Hernandez’s girlfriend is Shayanna Jennings. Lloyd was dating Jennings’ sister.
While football paid the bills for Hernandez, who was released from his $40 million contract with the New England Patriots, the sport did not do the same for Lloyd. Lloyd played linebacker for the Boston Bandits, a semi-pro team in the New England Football League. He had to pay to play football, providing his own equipment to play for the Bandits. According to CNN, in order to do so, Lloyd worked as a landscaper.
Both men faced legal trouble in the past.
When Hernandez was 17, he was arrested in Gainesville, Fla. for fighting a bouncer at a bar off the University of Florida campus. Just last week a civil suit was filed against Hernandez. A Connecticut man says Hernandez shot him in the face in February, causing him to lose an eye.
Lloyd’s legal trouble was less severe. According to the Boston Globe, Lloyd was arrested in 2008 for fighting and in 2010 for breaking and entering. Both cases were later dismissed.
Hernandez’s family has possibly seen the end of his time as a free man. If convicted, Hernandez faces life in prison without parole. There is no ‘possibly’ for Lloyd’s family.
Either way, they have seen the life of a loved one come to an end.
