Hartford city official: Rock Cats move is “done deal”

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)–A Hartford city official told News 8 on Tuesday that the Rock Cats’ rumored move to Hartford is “a done deal.”

But don’t tell that to New Britain mayor Erin Stewart, who has repeatedly denied that the Rock Cats will move out of New Britain.

The Hartford Courant reported on Monday that the team was in talks to move to a new stadium in Hartford. City officials told the Courant that a proposal is on the table to build a stadium at Main and Trumbull streets–in an area known as “12B” just north of downtown Hartford. The minor league team would begin playing there in 2016.

An emergency meeting reportedly took place at Rock Cats headquarters on Tuesday morning.

A Rock Cats vice president vehemently denied the team was moving.

“Every time I hear the rumor, I always call the general manager just to double check, just to get him on the phone and say, ‘Is there any truth to this?’ And they always say no, this is all rumor,” Stewart said.

“I have a very close relationship with the Rock Cats. This is a rumor that always flies around. It’s the third or fourth time I’ve heard it.”

Stewart tweeted the following around 4:30 pm on Monday:

The Rock Cats’ lease with the city of New Britain ends at the conclusion of the 2015 season.
