UConn’s Bob Diaco on Arkeel Newsome: “He needs to get the ball more, and he will”

Connecticut head coach Bob Diaco likes to focus on the positives, and though there weren’t many in UConn’s 35-10 loss to BYU last Friday, one of them had to be the play of freshman running backs Josh Marriner and Ansonia’s Arkeel Newsome.

“Arkeel showed he’s got a burst, he hits everything at full speed, he’s got good vision,” Diaco said. “He’s an impressive back, and he needs to get the ball more. And he will.”

Diaco said his plan for Saturday against Stony Brook is to give both Newsome and Marriner at least 10 more snaps a piece. News 8’s John Pierson thought Marriner looked like he was running angry against BYU.

“Somewhat, yes,” Marriner responded with a laugh. “I run with a purpose, no matter who we’re going against, no matter what size they are.”
