Bob Diaco on taking over at UConn: “This was a giant mess.”

STORRS, Conn. (WTNH)–Everyone knew the UConn football program was in the midst of a rebuild when head coach Bob Diaco took the job last spring.

But Diaco himself admitted on Tuesday that he had no idea just how far the program had fallen under former head coach Paul Pasqualoni.

“When I first came, there was a conversation about building on. No. This was not building on. This is tear down, rebuild,” Diaco told reporters at a press conference in Storrs. “It was a mess. A giant mess. Now it’s just a much smaller mess.”

Diaco went on to criticize the players’ conditioning and commitment to winning.

“It was unbelievable how physically weak and fat the players were,” he said. “The culture of losing. The acceptance of losing, losing behavior, a losing mentality. I could stand here for three hours and go through stuff. It’s spectacular.”
