After 1-14 start, underdog Sacred Heart baseball finds itself in NCAA Tournament

(WTNH)–The Sacred Heart baseball team is all packed and ready to take off for Texas for the NCAA college baseball tournament.

The Pioneers practiced early today in Bridgeport and leave for Texas tomorrow morning. Nick Gianquinto’s team will take on the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University on Friday night.

TCU is ranked 7th in the country and the Pioneers are a big underdog. But after starting out this season 1-14, Sacred Heart players and coaches say they should never be counted out.

“It’s the guys that coach recruits,” said shortstop Zach Short. “He recruits ballplayers, people who don’t give up. And that’s the group of guys we have.”

“We’re always underdogs, especially coming into this year, starting off 1-14, everyone thought that we weren’t even going to make it to the NEC Tournament, let alone win it,” said pitcher James Cooksey.

Game 1 of the double elimination tournament begins Friday night at 8.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN 3. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
