SHELTON, Conn. (WTNH)–29 up, 27 down.
Shelton’s Mike Cowell was nearly perfect on Tuesday night, as he no-hit North Haven in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament.
Cowell, who we profiled on SportzEdge Tonight earlier this month, struck out six and did not walk a batter in the Gaels’ 3-0 win, his second no-hitter of the season. (Cowell also began the year by no-hitting Branford). He would have had a perfect game if not for two Gaels errors. North Haven didn’t hit a ball out of the infield the entire game.
“It was important for us to come out and get off to a good start,” Cowell told the Shelton Herald. “I threw the ball well today. It was an important win for us in the tournament.”
“It’s always in the back of your head (a no-hitter). As a pitcher, you’re not really concerned with that. You’re more concerned with getting the win for your team.”
Shelton will play Fairfield Prep in the SCC semifinals.
In other action on Tuesday night, Notre Dame-West Haven defeated Daniel Hand, 7-3, to advance to the SCC semis. (Check out the highlights here). They’ll take on either Amity or Sheehan at 7 p.m. on Thursday in West Haven.
