No, not the hit song by Calvin Harris but the one season of the year where everyone can go outside at any point and have some fun playing sports.
Growing up as the fourth of seven children in a family who enjoyed eating outside for dinner after my Dad would grill some burgers we’d break away from the table the moment dinner was done and set up a whiffle ball game in the backyard.
Sure we’d keep score, someone had to win bragging rights when we split up the family to make the two teams. Those summer evenings in particular stick out because even if the temperature reached the nineties, it was cool enough by 6pm to play a game.
The breeze was perfect, not too much but enough to enjoy the sunshine and each other’s company. As we grew up, we never stopped playing and even now having nieces and nephews joining us the fun never stops.
The summer fun never stops as it begins with laughter, family and friends just coming together to play whiffle ball, volleyball or go swimming. School is out sure, and with it comes that extra sense of freedom for kids who have off. Summer activities and sports aren’t about how well you can perform although everyone is entitled to their own set of bragging rights; it’s about whom you spend that time with.
Baseball happens to be one of my favorite sports and it doesn’t matter what time of year it is, having a game is something I look forward to. Even volleyball, when you can get a whole group of people to play a game the fun never ceases as every single player wants an opportunity to spike the ball to the ground.
Summer of course brings opportunity for additional baseball and softball leagues, not just for kids but for adults as well who keep the child inside of them alive by playing ball in various different leagues.
Baseball has long been considered the sport of summer, a kids game, and America’s pastime and for any sport to be worth playing, we must all play the kids game like we did when we were kids. The nostalgia felt playing sports in the summer gives that sense of hope, which no matter how old or distant from sports we get nothing is more timeless than being able to play again.
From barbeques and picnics to swings and misses, summer sports are some of my favorite sports because the weather is perfect, the desire to play is ever-present and the sport of choice is always something different.
At summer parties I enjoy playing whiffle ball of course, but sometimes what is more enjoyable is playing volleyball across the yard because everyone playing is involved on every serve. This makes for more entertaining dives to save the serve or just the general coming together of one team supporting each other.
From Memorial Day to Labor Day and the Fourth of July in between plenty of opportunity to get out there and play something fun with family or friends makes those hot dogs and potato salad taste that much better when you sit down for dinner that night. Laughter after laughter comes and goes daily when you go out there and play sports in the summer.
It’s summertime…go out there and play!
