(WTNH)–The high school sports season is in the rearview mirror, and the summer months usually mean some All-Star games for some of the state’s best players.
On Monday night, a unique game was put on by the Softball Umpires association of Greater New Haven.
It pays to be smart and athletic, as some of the area’s top players gathered for the Scholar Athlete Classic. It’s the 8th year of the event.
24 girls heading to college next season were invited. They each receive a gift bag, and 250 dollars towards their schooling.
In this game, GPA’s and community involvement count more than prowess on the field.
But you know what? These girls can play too. Once again, this event was competive, with the West beating the East by one run, 5-4.
In eight years, the event has given away $30,000 and given the players one more high school go-round.
