Arrivederci! Former Sacred Heart basketball star Shane Gibson to play in Italy

By: Paul Guarino

Local star Shane Gibson recently signed with Recanati, a professional basketball team in Italy.

Gibson is from Killingly, and played at Killingly High School, where he was a standout. He received a scholarship to play college basketball at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. Once again he was the shining star there, scoring 2,079 career points and averaging over 21 points per game in his final two seasons.

Gibson was the first player in Sacred Heart men’s basketball history to earn post-season recognition three times in his career.

After a stellar career at Sacred Heart, Gibson’s new goal was to make it to the NBA.

He wasn’t selected in the NBA Draft in 2013, but was chosen by the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA Development League, with the fourth pick in the third round of that league’s draft.

Gibson bounced around, playing for the Sacramento Kings’ summer league team, but was ultimately cut and didn’t play in the 2013-2014 season.

That off-season, Gibson worked harder than ever, determined to make a team. In late 2014, the D-League draft came along and Gibson’s name was called again, this time by the Idaho Stampede (NBA affiliate of the Utah Jazz).

He had a great season with the Stampede playing in 50 games (starting 36) averaging 26.5 minutes per game, 12.5 points per game, shooting 44.7% from field goal range, 39.8% from three-point range and 87.1% at the free throw line. He also participated in the NBA D-League Three-Point Contest in New York City at All-Star weekend.

Gibson is very excited to take he talents to Italy and still hopes one day he can make it to the National Basketball Association.

He stated on his Facebook page:

“Just signed contract to play in Italy this season, want to thank God for blessing me with the drive and determination to avoid all the temptations that go along with living in today’s society so that I could achieve my dream of being a professional ball player. Kid from Killingly CT is about to be entertaining Italian fans for a year living in Italy. Smh wow, surreal. Ima have some Italian to speak for yall wen I get back haha
