Yale grad Tyler Varga, undrafted by National Football League teams, is still a survivor in training camp with the Indianapolis Colts, with one pre-season game to go. One of the reasons is probably his performance in a 24-14 win over the St. Louis Rams last Saturday.
Varga registered his first NFL touchdown on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter. To view it, go here and look under “Big Play Highlights.”
In three pre-season games, Varga has nine carries for 32 yards, three catches for 19, two kickoff returns (both in the last game) for 54 yards, and one solo tackle. He is being tried at running back, on kickoff returns, and for other special teams’ roles.
Here are Twitter comments from @Coltsfanwilson, who is the lead editor at the Colts blog Stampedeblue.com:
“Another player who impressed tonight was Tyler Varga, the undrafted running back out of Yale. I really liked him when the Colts signed him as an undrafted free agent, but he didn’t get many chances in training camp or in the first two preseason games.
“Tonight, however, Varga saw a lot of time with the second team offense and looked good. He’s a guy who just won’t give up and always fights for extra yards. He scored a touchdown tonight, but he impressed most with his effort and toughness.”
The Colts have one more pre-season game on Thursday before final cuts. Varga hopes to be around when the regular season begins on Sept. 13th.
