UConn pleased with season-opening win over Villanova: “This is a different team.”

(WTNH)–The games are going to get more difficult from here, but the fellas on the UConn football team deserve a little time to celebrate their opening night win.

Yes, the win comes against FCS school Villanova, but what’s important in the team’s growth at this point is simply that they did win.

The Huskies were trailing at the half, but came back strong in the second half with some big plays on offense, and ultimately, a 20-15 victory.

Based on last year’s results, there may have been some people who were waiting for UConn to blow it.

“I think the people who said ‘here we go again,’ will quickly realize they’re mistaken,” said linebacker Graham Stewart. “If you look back a couple of years ago, we played a good team like this in Towson, and we really did crack, and we got scraped by them.”

“This is a good Villanova team, and we came out and overcame the adversity, came out that second half and really took it to them,” Stewart said.

“Throughout practice, coach put us in situations where we have to own up, we have to rise to the occasion,” said running back Ron Johnson. “And we rose to the occasion [tonight].”

“Years before, we would have probably folded,” said linebacker Junior Joseph. “But this is a different team.”

UConn returns to action next Saturday (9/12). They host Army at Noon at Rentschler Field.
