(WTNH)–Not sure how big an award that comes from a win over Villanova is to UConn starting quarterback Bryant Shirreffs, but if you asked Huskies head coach Bob Diaco, we’re sure he’d feel awesome about it.

Shirreffs won the New England Football Writers’ Association’s weekly Gold Helmet Award for his season-opening performance against Villanova, in which he completed 12 of 20 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

Stonehill cornerback Donovan Phanor was named the FCS Gold Helmet Award winner as the Skyhawks defeated Bloomsburg College, 27-10.
