NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)- The leading scorer in high school football this year isn’t a quarterback, running back or a wide receiver, she’s a kicker. “My goal wasn’t to be recognized it was to better the team,” says Sabrina Fronte.
A soccer player as a kid, her then middle school coach kidded maybe she should try football. “I would kick the ball and it would go right over the top of the net and he would hold up the field goal sign and he would be, ‘you should be the kicker’.”
Since trying out and becoming the starter for North Haven as a sophomore, Fronte has cast her shadow on the high school football scene, “I do it cause it’s fun, it’s a great atmosphere being out there with the boys.” Senior linebacker Jeremy Imperati remembers his first impression of Fronte, “she came out and kicked for us and once we saw her kick we knew she was legit.”
The senior kicker is the perfect compliment to the Indians high powered offense, North Haven has scored the most points in the state this season. It helped Fronte set a Southern Connecticut Conference record for points in a season by a kicker. ” I would have complete faith in her to win us a game.” says Imperati, “in practice she drills them long all the time, it’s fun to watch.”
The college bound senior is also attempting to leave her mark on the state record books, she’s on the fringe of the all-time top 10 kickers in points scored.
Fronte is glad she went out for the team, although she admits to not realizing how much work went into it. Her teammates are happy she tried out too, “we’ve grown on her, she’s grown on us,” Imperati said, “she means a whole lot to us, she’s like our sister.” The feeling is mutual, Fronte went from having no brothers, to over 50, “they treat me just as if I’m one of them, they’re respectful, they’ve never been jerks to me. It’s been great.”
Fronte wouldn’t rule out kicking at the next level with the right fit. She hopes attend the University of New Haven to study criminal justice/forensic science.
At 6:30pm Tuesday at Vanacore Field in North Haven, Fronte and teammates host Middletown in Round 1 of the state playoffs. The Indians are the #1 seed in the ultra competitive Class L bracket.
