Notre Dame’s Doug Caliendo scores game-winning goal on day father passed away

(WTNH)–What an emotional day for high school hockey player Doug Caliendo. The Notre Dame-West Haven defenseman carried the weight of a heavy heart to the ice on Wednesday afternoon, then came away with a moment he’ll never forget.

Doug lost his dad Lou Wednesday morning, after a battle with stomach cancer. He scored the game-winning goal in Notre Dame’s game against Northwest Catholic hours later:

The team held a moment of silence before the Green Knights’ game with Northwest Catholic. The Lions donated to the Strong4Lou fund.

Caliendo was in the starting lineup on defense, and it was an exciting game end to end. Northwest Catholic took a 2-0 lead in the second after a goal from Paul Arel.

But the Green Knights tied it in the third, and Caliendo came up with a storybook ending, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to give Notre Dame a 3-2 win.
