Skimboarding becoming a popular way to ride the waves at the beach

(WTNH)–During this heat wave, everyone is looking for a way to cool off. Tons of people are making their way into the water.

News 8’s Erik Dobratz drew the tough assignment of going to the beach earlier this week for SportzEdge. His mission–to learn more about the sport of skimboarding.

What did he learn? Well, first of all, that the sport is just about as hard as it looks. Skimboarding started in California back in the 1920’s, as lifeguards were looking for a way to take advantage of small waves along the shore.

Surfboards were too big, so they improvised with small pieces of wood.
