(WTNH)–UConn senior guard Rodney Purvis will wear No. 15 this season in honor of Tyrek Coger, his friend and fellow Raleigh, North Carolina native, who passed away after a team workout with Oklahoma State on July 21.

Coger, who was set to play for Oklahoma State this season after spending two years in junior college, died from an enlarged heart.

Coger grew up with Purvis in Raliegh and lived with the Purvis family for a while. Rodney’s mother, Shanda McNair, was his godmother, and Rodney considered him a brother.

Oklahoma State spokesman Gary Schutt told reporters that Coger did not appear to be struggling during a workout Thursday, but the team noticed issues shortly thereafter. 9-1-1 was called at 5:08 p.m. Coger was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m.

He was just 21 years old.

UConn will face Oklahoma State in the Maui Invitational on November 21.
