(WTNH)–The men’s college hockey programs in Connecticut have had a lot of success over the years. Quinnipiac has twice played for a national title, Yale won a title in 2013, and UConn is building a winner, in part thanks to its home at the XL Center in Hartford.
On Monday, Sacred Heart University made a big move in an attempt to join them. The Pioneers announced that they will play their home games at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. This is a major shot in the arm for a school that is looking to upgrade its hockey program.
“This is something that we’ve been looking forward to for a while, our players couldn’t be more excited to get in here. And it just helps in a myriad of ways,” said head coach C.J. Marottolo. “With our recruiting, to be able to walk in a recruit to a venue like this, and show them that we are about development. That’s what any competitive athlete wants to know, how are they going to get better. Moving to here, I think we’ve answered that question for them.”
The Pioneers’ first game at Webster Bank Arena is October 15th, against 2014-15 national champion Union.
