No. 3 Quinnipiac meets unbeaten UConn in hockey showdown on Wednesday

(WTNH)–You’ve got to love it when the local college hockey teams get together. On Wednesday night in Hamden, third-ranked Quinnipiac hosts unbeaten UConn.

The two schools have some history, as they used to play in the same conference. Mike Cavanaugh’s Huskies are to 2-0-2 out of the gate, which ties the best start in program history.

It’s just the third time Connecticut has gone unbeaten in four games. Rand Pecknold’s Bobcats are 2-1-1 to start the season. In the rivalry with UConn, the Bobcats hold the advantage.

They beat the Huskies a year ago in Hartford, 6-2. The coaches have a ton of respect for each other’s programs.

“You know, we go way back with UConn. We went Division 1 the same time that they did. And we always look forward to playing our in-state rivals,” said Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold.

“He has a terrific program there, and he’s been doing it for a while,” said Cavanaugh of Pecknold. “Yeah, they lost some good players in St. Denis and Anas, but they have the Cliftons back, and Landon Smith. They still have a host of good players, and we’re going to have to play very, very well to win tomorrow night.”

It should be a great one.
