NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brandon Sherrod ’16 has found a home to begin his professional basketball career. Sherrod, a first team All-Ivy selection for the Bulldogs last winter, has signed with MEC Energy Roseto in Italy’s Serie A2 League.
“I chose to join Roseto because the organization has a great reputation and the fan base is really excited about basketball there,” said Sherrod, who is expecting to join the team in time for a game this Sunday. “Additionally, the area is beautiful and the league is very competitive which makes it a great place to start my career.”
Sherrod enjoyed an outstanding career for the Bulldogs, playing in 114 games, scoring 847 points, grabbing 515 rebounds and finishing seventh all-time at Yale with 82 blocked shots. As a senior, he set an NCAA single-season record by making 30 consecutive field goals and was eighth in the Ivy League in rebounding (7.0 rpg.), third in field goal percentage (.568) and second in offensive rebounds (84). In 14 Ivy games, he averaged 15.8 points and shot 64.4 percent from the field. In the NCAA Tournament against Duke, he scored 22 points, and following the season was the recipient of the team’s Stan Smith Senior Award and Josh Hill Dedication Award.
Sherrod, a Bridgeport, Connecticut native, also received quite a bit of attention as a member of the Yale Whiffenpoofs, the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group. He missed the 2014-15 season travelling the world and performing with the Whiffs.
“I followed Brandon closely during his senior season at Yale, and I think he is a very mature player for his age, and he will fit well to our system,” said Roseto head coach Emanuele di Paolantonio. “He is what we need on the court to complete our roster, both offensively and defensively. I decided on Brandon after speaking with him because he seems to be a good person as well.”
Since graduation in May, Sherrod has been working on the staff of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as an outreach coordinator and also has been a motivational speaker for USA Youth Outreach. He recently delivered the keynote address at Bridgeport’s fourth annual Back to School Youth Summit.
Sherrod is the third member of the Class of 2016 to sign a professional contract. Justin Sears is with the Giessen 46ers in Germany and Nick Victor signed with Gimle BBK of Norway’s BLNO League.
There are two other former Bulldogs who will be playing professionally this year. Javier Duren ’15, signed with Kaposvari of Hungary’s A League after an outstanding rookie season in Holland, and Armani Cotton ’15 is signed with the Leuven Bears of Belgium’s Scooore League.
In addition, Greg Mangano ’12 remains a free agent coming off a strong season with the Kangoeroes Willebroek in Belgium.
