STORRS, Conn. (WTNH)– Two UConn football players were arrested on weapons charges after a motor vehicle stop Wednesday night.
Police say just after 10 p.m., officers observed a silver Chevy Malibu traveling eastbound on Bolton Road with only one headlight. While following the car, police say they observed the vehicle cross over the double yellow line so they conducted a motor vehicle stop.
During the stop, police say they smelled marijuana coming from within the car. The driver, identified as 19-year-old Nazir Williams, of New Jersey, gave officers consent to search the vehicle. Officers then found Williams to be in possession of approximately 4 grams of marijuana and a loaded BB gun. Police say the BB gun appeared to be an actual firearm and did not have the orange tip marking that is on a BB gun.
Police say the weapon was within the reach of Williams, as well as one of the other two occupants of the car, identified as 19-year-old Felton Alfonzo Blackwell, of New Jersey. Both Williams and Blackwell were charged with having weapons in a motor vehicle.
Williams, who is under the age of 21, was also in possession of a open container of vodka. He was additionally charged with possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of less than a half ounce of marijuana.
Blackwell was held on $1,500 bond and Williams was held on a $2,000 bond. Both students have been suspended at this time.
