Heartbreak of state championship loss fueled Shelton’s run to weightlifting title in Nutmeg Games

(WTNH)–Getting over one loss in the state championship is tough enough. Try back to back losses. Shelton lost in the last two state title games, one in Class LL and another in the now-defunct LL small division.

The Gaels are done feeling bad for themselves, anbd they’re looking to contend for a title again in 2016. It started in the weight room for Shelton and worked its way onto the field.

“I remember the bus ride home, dead silent, tears, crying everywhere. It’s heartbreaking, it really hurt us. It’s a gap in our heart that we’re never going to get back,” said senior John Sobotka.

“But coming out of the gate this year, we were very motivated. We won the state championship for weightlifting, Nutmeg State Games. And a lot of that came from losing that state championship game. Every lift we did, we wanted to do it together and as a team.”
