(WTNH)–Sunday was a big day for University of New Haven guard Danny Upchurch.
The 6-0, 180-pound junior dropped 33 points in an exhibition game against UConn at the XL Center.
This is Upchurch’s first season with the Chargers, after spending the last two playing Division 1 basketball at Charleston Southern. The Bridgeport native says he transferred home looking for more playing time.
Upchurch is used to persevering. He lost his father to heart complications when he was a senior in high school. He says basketball helped to keep his family smiling.
“It was tough, I had to comfort my mom because her and my father were partners. I had a little brother that was one years old and I had to let him know everything was going to be alright, and to keep it normal with him. I tried to stay close to the family and make everyone excited about coming to my games, and having a good time at my games. My whole family would come to all my games and that’s what brought us more together and stronger.”
Upchurch and the Chargers open the regular season on November 11 against Mercy College.
