(WTNH)–Tough news for the Danbury boys soccer team. On Saturday, the Hatters were supposed to play for the Class LL championship. On Friday though, the team was disqualified from the tournament for using an illegal player.

CIAC rules say that any team using an illegal player must forfeit and be replaced by the team’s last opponent, which means Shelton will now face Farmington for the title. The Hatters beat the Gaels in the semifinals earlier this week.

Danbury High School athletic director Chip Salvestrini said the player in question did not meet academic requirements at the start of the year. He had been practicing but didn’t start playing until he had the necessary grades.
