(WTNH) — Getting your ski gear ready to hit the slopes? Well, it is only November; it shouldn’t really be snowing yet, but a lot of the ski areas in New England and a lot of you probably suffered last winter due to a lack of snow. So, how are these resorts adapting to the recent changes in Mother Nature? WTNH’s Sam Kantrow visited a local ski resort to find out.

The slopes in New England are typically covered in abundant amounts of snow. Unfortunately last winter, the slopes were pretty bare. That has forced ski areas in New England to spend millions of dollars to “beat mother nature”

Sean Hayes, CEO Powder Ridge Mountain Park & Resort says: “We’ve more than doubled our snowmaking capability here at the mountain, which is the key, because when Mother Nature does give us those (cold) temperatures, we have to attack”.

The problem is that sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t like to cooperate. Sometimes the temperatures are too warm to get snow. So the ski resorts are turning to technology to allow for wintertime sports, even in the summertime.

“This mountain will go to synthetic snow over the next 24 months”, says Hayes.

Hayes says that the best part of these planned improvements will be that we will be able to ski in August.

So what is this “synthetic snow” all about? It’s a pad of carpet made of plastic that allows you to ski or board regardless of the weather.

So what does Hayes think about this season? “Do we think we can get it open by Christmas? We hope so, if Mother Nature cooperates a little. By next year, it won’t matter, because we will be skiing, no matter what,” he said.
