Quinnipiac and Fairfield battle for MAAC Volleyball Championship

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (SPORTZEDGE) — The MAAC Volleyball Championship will pit both Nutmeg teams against each other as the Quinnipiac Bobcats will take on the Fairfield Stags on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Stags are the defending conference champions and have made it to their 17th conference finals while the Bobcats are appearing in the program’s first conference championship.

Fairfield earned the top seed in the tournament going a perfect 18-0 in conference play and advanced to the finals after defeating the Siena Saints 3-1 in the semi-finals. For the Stags, a win on Sunday would be their ninth conference title in program history.

For Quinnipiac, 2016 has been a historic turnaround as the Bobcats have advanced to their first conference championship game in program history. After defeating Marist 3-1 on Saturday, Quinnipiac earned their 21st victory of the season. Not only is this a program record, but the Bobcats had only won 21 games over the previous six seasons combined from 2010-2015 and only five ins over the previous two seasons.

These two teams meet in the final game of the regular season with the Stags prevailing at home 3-1 but edged the Bobcats in the fourth set 26-24.

The championship game will be a 2 p.m. at Fairfield’s Alumni Hall and will be broadcasted on ESPN 3.
