Southern Connecticut Conference well-represented in high school football playoffs

Sixth-seed Shelton scored a huge win over Newtown in Class LL on Tuesday.

(WTNH)–It’s playoff time in high school football, and the Southern Connecticut Conference is well-represented. West Haven and Shelton both reached the Class LL playoffs, while Notre-Dame West Haven made it in L, and Hillhouse in Class M.

The SCC is brutal (just ask North Haven), and it’s teams are battle-tested.

“I think it’s great, it’s a competitive game every week, and we have to get ready every week,” said Notre Dame-West Haven coach Tom Marcucci. “It’s a challenge, there are no boring games, you come out ready to play and if you’re not ready, you lose.”

“This year it helped us, last year I thought it hurt us,” said Shelton head coach Jeff Roy. “This year, we’re healthy and I think that competition every week gets us ready for the state tournament.”

“They’re very excited about having a playoff game, period,” said Hillhouse head coach Reggie Lytle. “But to even have it at home makes it more exciting and we’re ready to play, ready to get it on.”

The playoffs start on Tuesday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
