New Haven Steelers’ Tyree McRea has shown strength, maturity beyond years after father’s death

(WTNH)–The ‘New Haven Steelers’ Pop Warner team is already in the ‘Happiest Place on Earth.’

They’re at Disney World for the Pop Warner Super Bowl, thanks to one of its strongest players. Tyree McRea is leading the team in interceptions. He never misses a practice, and coaches say he’s always positive.

All of this after losing his father before the season. His dad was shot and killed in New Haven. McRea is only 13 years old, but he’s carried on with a maturity beyond his years.

“I couldn’t believe it at first. It was crazy. He was just a nice guy and he didn’t bother nobody. I didn’t know what was going on,” Tyree said.

“If you didn’t hear about it in the news, or no one informed you, you would have never known that it happened,” said assistant coach Christopher Creighton. “He came to practice, and he has not missed practice.”

“It was kind of hard, but I had to fight through it for the team and for him,” Tyree said. “For my family.”

Tyree plays on the junior midget squad, which plays on Sunday. The unlimited division team plays Saturday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
