Darien looking to become latest to repeat in Class LL football

(WTNH)–The hardest thing to do in sports is repeat—at least in SportzEdge anchor Henry Chisholm’s opinion.

Class LL in football goes against that in every way though, as dating back to 2010, each team that won the state title won again the next year.

Darien won it last year, ending Southington’s two-year run. The Blue Wave are back in the state title game again this year, and they’ll face a Ridgefield team that went on the road to beat West Haven and Shelton in the final.

Darien head coach Rob Trifone says consistency has been the key to staying on top.

“I think we have a tough opponent, but who wouldn’t want to be in this position at this point, because reaching the top was hard. Staying there is even harder,” Trifone said. “We’ve had great consistency with our coaching staff, haven’t had anyone move on. We’ve got great kids who’ve bought into the program, and we don’t change what we do.”

Darien and Ridgefield kick off at 2:30 p.m. in West Haven on Saturday.
