(WTNH)–Christina McHale and Varvara Lepchenko ensured American success on day one of qualifying at the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies.

After a morning of persistent rain, New Jersey’s McHale sprinted out of the blocks and raced to a confidence-boosting 6-2 6-2 victory over talented Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Lepchenko eased through 6-3 6-3 against Japan’s Risa Osaki, while No.2 seed Kristyna Pliskova overcame a fightback from Arina Rodionova to advance 6-2 6-7 (6) 6-2.

Incoming Yale Freshman Samantha Martinelli, who was granted a wild card into qualifying, relished playing in her first WTA-level tournament but came up short, losing to Magda Linette of Poland 6-2, 6-1.
